Sacred Shawl Society

Sacred Shawl Society

The Sacred Shawl Society was founded in 2015 by Wild Horse Butte Community Development Corporation in Martin, SD for the protection of women and children from domestic and sexual violence.  There had been no safe place for victims of domestic violence on Pine Ridge Reservation since the only women’s shelter had closed around 2009.

Since their opening in late 2015 Lakota Friends Circle and Partner Groups have supplied most of the bedding, kitchen and bathroom needs, clothing and toiletries for clients, toys for children and a $100 monthly food allowance at the local grocery in Martin. LFC also sends a monthly shipment of diapers, laundry supplies, toiletries and other needs made possible through your generous donations. The shelter has lots of extra storage space so store supplies for other programs we support in Martin–My Space Youth Center and Wild Horse Butte CDC which helps young mothers, babies, elders, the homeless population and anyone in need.
