FOR THE CHILDREN OF PINE RIDGE RESERVATION

For the Children of Pine Ridge Reservation, founded by Pam Little Sparrow in 2008, is a group of dedicated volunteers serving Lakota children and their families living on Reservations in South Dakota.  Although our group is located on Ravelry and most of our members are proficient knitters and crocheters, we also work with other groups through Lakota Friends Circle and help provide clothing, food, diapers and many other essentials to families in need.  Our group’s main focus is on the under-served areas of Pine Ridge and Rosebud Reservations. Please visit our group and join us as we work together making life just a little easier for those in need.  In addition to working with partner groups serving White Buffalo Calf Women’s Society, Sacred Shawl Society, Maggie’s House and others we exclusively serve the following areas:

Rosebud Elementary School– We provide school supplies, shoes, clothing, blankets, winter hats, mittens and scarves and a Christmas gift to the 300 students, Pre-K through grade 5, of Rosebud Elementary School on Rosebud Reservation in SD.

OST Veteran’s Homeless Shelter – They defended us and our liberties, now they need our help. The shelter houses up to 13 men, each may stay up to 2 years. They’re provided a place to sleep and have access to a kitchen to prepare their own meals. Our group purchased a TV and game system and a computer for the recreation area. We help provide cleaning and kitchen supplies, pantry staples, clothing and a special holiday care package for each resident on Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans’ Day.

Ruby’s Homeless Outreach Program – Our dear Ruby who fed the homeless with her meager earnings has passed away. In her memory, we continue to help the Elders in the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home. Many have no visitors. We provide them with blankets, wheelchair afghans, shawls, scarves, hats, gloves, socks, coloring books and crayons, and crossword puzzles. Some residents love to hug a teddy bear or a soft toy.

Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home – Located 6 miles South of Pine Ridge, this nursing home houses 35 seniors. We provide them with lap blankets, wheelchair throws. When the cooler months arrive, we will send scarves, hats, gloves, and shawls.

Maggie’s House – A unique shelter for young adults. After almost a year of efforts, Maggie’s House is finally opening. They can house up to 18 clients. Residents are taught life skills, budgeting, healthy eating habits, and they’re encouraged to finish High School or attend college. Some of the residents receive social security ($90 per week), others receive Snap. The Shelter charges $150 per month for rent & utilities. If someone cannot pay, then the Shelter absorbs the cost and tries to help the resident find a job or other means of support.

Residents can stay for up to 22 months, this gives them time to get on their feet and address any problems they may have. Most are singles, but they also get couples, some bring their children.

They need canned goods, crackers, oatmeal, rice, spaghetti and can also use school supplies.  For clothing they tend to be on the larger side and tall. New underwear and toiletries are always needed.

Sacred Shawl Society -This shelter houses women and children. They need seasonal clothing, new underwear, toiletries, laundry detergent, shoes, baby diapers, and baby bottles and formula. We recently collected money to purchase a freezer which will enable the shelter to buy food in bulk. The collective kitchen can always use pots and pans, towels, utensils, and cleaning supplies. They have a play room and indoor games are welcome.

Bright Start – Visiting Nurse Mary offers education and assistance to new mothers. She assesses the health and development of babies and toddlers. We provide her the many items babies need such as clothing, toiletries, diapers, nursing pillows and covers, blankets, and formula.
